Evie Clarke bid farewell to Gibsons council at the July 12 regular council meeting. The new high school graduate is headed off to University of Victoria to study education. Clarke was the student representative on council this year and the alternate last year. Mayor Bill Beamish presented Clarke with gifts on behalf of staff and council, including a wooden box full of notes and memories from staff and council.
“It's been really rewarding being part of something bigger than myself, which I've never really felt to this scale,” Clarke said. “I don't just take it for granted as much, because I see all the procedures and all the work that you guys put into it.”
Council had parting thoughts for their departing member and Colten Rockford, this year’s alternate who will return in the fall as the student representative.
“I just wanted to thank you both sincerely for your service, your time and your commitment. And just remind you what an inspiration you guys are being for the young folks that are coming up behind you,” said Coun. Aleria Ladwig. “I think you're setting a great example. And I know I've pointed you out to my daughters.”
Coun. David Croal said, “I would really like to just thank the commitment that the councillors have brought to meetings, not only just what they've done in participation in the meetings, but some of the outreach things that you've done in the community.”
Coun. Annemarie DeAndrade said she found the experience important on both sides. “From our sides, hearing from youth. And I think for youth, really understanding how democracy is done right. Democracy is not a magic thing that just …happens.”
