Harbour Plan strategy in the works

After examining a synopsis of proceedings from last months' harbour area plan meeting, Gibsons council is looking at ways to communicate and engage with the public more.

At the March 15 council meeting, councilors directed staff to create a communications strategy and proposed schedule to move the plan forward and that staff review further waterside studies.

Town planner Michael Epp explained the two-process recommendation and how it is based on public comments made at the Feb. 23 meeting.

Mayor Barry Janyk asked if the communications strategy include what he feels is a fundamental town hall meeting.

"I think we need to have a good conversation with the community about what this plan is about," said Janyk.

Staff will bring recommendations to the next planning committee meeting on Apr. 12 for further discussion.

Strategic plan

While council was in favour of endorsing its strategic plan update Tuesday night, council made several suggested additions.

Coun. Gerry Tretick said he did not see the clear identification of the inclusion of young adults as part of the overall strategic objectives. Saying he would be meeting with the VOICE on the Coast organization, he felt it would be good to assure them "that this is a place other than just to retire, but a place to come to do other things as well."

Council received the plan, but will be asking staff to add a section pertinent to youth.
