The Ruby Lake Lagoon Wood Duck and Wilderness Festival will take place on Sunday, May 1, from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. at Ruby Lake Lagoon. This popular event, organized by the Ruby Lake Lagoon Nature Reserve Society and hosted by Ruby Lake Resort, celebrates spring, wilderness conservation and the return of the wood ducks to Ruby Lake Lagoon. This year's focus is the construction of the society's brand new Iris Griffith Interpretive Centre. This exciting new educational facility has been designed by the society to help all ages explore and appreciate the natural wonders of the Sunshine Coast. It will serve as the base for many exciting community and school programs. Construction is currently underway and guided tours of the Interpretive Centre site will take place throughout the day. The Wood Duck Festival will kick off with an early guided hike by birder Tony Greenfield at 8:30 a.m. Main festival events start at 11 a.m. Everyone is invited to come and enjoy the artisans, children's activities, musicians, guest speakers and exhibits by wilderness and conservation groups, including displays, donor information and merchandise for sale by the Lagoon Society.

Great entertainment will be provided by talented local musicians, including Joe Stanton and the Precious Littles, Gaetan and Friends, Drumheads: West African style, Myth Makers, Ten Bear Band, Mad Park, Sokole, Soup Bean Katie and the Corn Pones, Randeesh and more. Annette Clarke will present a slide show of incredible nature photography by the late John Clarke. Special booths by local artists and artisans will include pottery, glass, metal, wood, jewellery, natural products, plants, baked goods and more. Fun activities will include bird and bat house building workshops, children's arts and crafts and a bird call competition open to all.
