There are only three years to go until the 2010 Olympics, but you don't have long to wait for the Sunshine Coast Spirit of B.C. week. The community committee has organized a number of fun-packed events in both Sechelt and Gibsons during the week of Feb. 10 to Feb. 17, thanks to the efforts of head organizer Nancy Hache.
Photo contestThe Spirit of B.C. 2010 Sunshine Coast Community Committee is looking for candid photographs of the people and events taking place in our community throughout Spirit of B.C. week.
Prizes will be awarded for first, second and third place. All photographs must be received by Feb. 26 for judging. Include your name, address, phone number and where the photo was taken. Skiing dayThe Sunshine Coast Outdoor Club will demonstrate both telemark skiing and cross country skiing on Feb. 10 from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. This event is open to the general public and takes place at Dakota Ridge.
Family fun dayThe Sunshine Coast Arena is the place to be on Saturday, Feb. 10, from 3:45 to 10:15 p.m.
There will be a free family skate from 3:45 to 5:15 p.m. Then the arena will be divided into three sections offering a public skating area at one end, a demonstration of figure skating by the Sunshine Coast Figure Skating Club in the centre and a pond hockey area at the other end for parents and children. This will be an open event for the public with no cost. Starting at 5:30 p.m., the midget rep team will play a game followed by men's A-division hockey and the women's league starting at 8:45 p.m.
Family swim dayOn Sunday, Feb. 11, from 1:30 to 5 p.m. the Gibsons pool will be open for a fun-filled free family swim open to the public.
Curling rocksThe Gibsons Curling Club is hosting a special event from 1:30 to 3:30 p.m. on Friday, Feb. 16.
Scots on the rocks is a friendly game with the club hosting four teams of curlers from Scotland who are visiting B.C. They will play a friendly game with four teams from the Gibsons Curling Club. This will be a free event, open to the general public. The Gibsons Curling Club will be serving refreshments.
Also on Saturday, Feb. 17, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. the club will be holding a community bonspiel open to the general public so that everyone who wants to can come out to the curling club and participate and at the same time learn about the club and the game of curling, meet new people and enjoy a fun-filled day. From 10:30 to 11 a.m. there will be a curling clinic and then from 11 to noon the first game will take place.
Speed skatingThere will be two events on Feb. 15 from 5:45 to 7:45 p.m. open to the general public: a demonstration by the Pacific Blades Speed Skating Club followed by a special tykes hockey game with lots of fun for the whole family.
