Elephants

The album has been created around Coast singer/songwriter George Connell’s passion for wordplay and supported by some innovative musicians, including percussionist Raphael Geronimo of Rumba Calzada, and the newest diva in the jazz firmament, Katherine Penfold. It was released on Sept. 21 and the CD release party will be Friday, Oct. 13 at 6 p.m. at the Sunshine Coast Botanical Gardens on Mason Road, West Sechelt. Gillespie in Gibsons

Terry Gillespie with Lyndell Montgomery presents a groove-heavy and entertaining fusion of blues and world music on Friday, Oct. 13 at 8 p.m. presented by One Foot Crow Craft Distillery, 700 Venture Way, Gibsons. Tickets are $20 at the door. Veteran Canadian blues artist Gillespie continues his first Western Canadian tour in two years with a concert that marks the release of Home Boy, his fifth solo album. Accompanied by bassist and fiddle player Montgomery, Gillespie’s music is blues based – but this is an artist who mixes genres with ease. His annual winters in Jamaica have given his songs a deep groove that’s hard to resist. The release of Gillespie’s new album marks his 50th year as a performer and his 70th birthday. He’s been part of the Canadian music scene since he immigrated to Canada at the height of the Vietnam War, and helped found Heaven’s Radio, a seminal Ottawa rock band.

Ladies Night

Next up for Playback, the classic rock band that makes you want to dance, is Ladies’ Night on Saturday, Oct. 14 at the Madeira Park Legion. For your $60 ticket you get cocktails at 6 p.m., dinner at 7 p.m., dancing and raffle prizes. Find tickets in advance at the Legion and at Harbour Insurance.
