Since its inception in 2020, the Book Giving Tree project has brought the joy of reading to children and families across the Sunshine Coast. Founded by Bev Terry, a passionate educator and volunteer with the Sunshine Coast Community Services Society’s (SCCSS) Bellies and Babies program, this initiative continues to inspire family literacy through the power of community giving.

The idea began with a simple yet impactful vision: to nurture a lifelong love of reading among children. In partnership with Talewind Books and SCCSS, a Christmas tree adorned with tags bearing the names of children in need was created. Each tag invited community members to purchase a book for a child, transforming a simple gift into a meaningful act of connection.

Though the initiative’s founders, Bev Terry and Bev Shaw of Talewind Books, have since passed away, their legacy remains a vibrant part of the community. Talewind Books, now led by Bev Shaw’s daughter, Courtney, has continued this cherished tradition alongside SCCSS’s Shirley French and a group of devoted volunteers. In the four years since its creation, the Book Giving Tree has provided more than 160 children with books to call their own, fostering a love of reading in families across the Coast.

“Delivering these books is one of the highlights of the season for our team,” said French. “It’s a wonderful way to honour Bev’s vision and bring joy to families in our programs. Talewind Books has been instrumental in making this initiative so special, and we’re endlessly grateful for their creativity and dedication.”

This November, the community is invited to keep Bevs' legacy alive by participating in the Book Giving Tree. Visit Talewind Books at 5494 Trail Avenue in Sechelt, select a name tag from the tree, and purchase a pre-selected book for a child in need. Together, we can continue to spread the gift of literacy and brighten the holiday season for local families.
