Kenzie took to the race track (or rather, air strip) for some high-speed, but safe, fun.

What’s a good place for young teens to strengthen their character and learn tactics, concentration and “the rules of life,” in full view of their family and friends and neighbours?

Teen championship racing, in the safe environs of a drag strip, under a strict regime following the International Hot Rod Association rulebook.

In drag racing, there is no room for coulda-shoulda-woulda or no-fair.

Secondary school teacher Brenda Masich says: “Teen Championship Racing allows youth aged 13 to 17 the opportunity to race against their peers in full-bodied street vehicles. An adult co-driver accompanies the young driver on all runs, to act as a coach and to join in the fun. The TCR program is an inexpensive way for families to get involved in drag racing and another chance for parents to cultivate a close working relationship with their children. Youth ages 13 to 17 may be licensed to compete in TCR.”

At July’s Sechelt drag races I saw two such youngsters grin and grow with pride.
