Taking count of Canadian bumblebees

Friends of the Earth Canada

Friends of the Earth Canada is calling on residents of the Sunshine Coast to join the Great Canadian Bumblebee Count and help scientists learn more about the important pollinators. All you need to do is take a picture of bumblebees you see in your area and upload the photo to www.bumblebeewatch.org by Aug. 15.

The Canadian member of Friends of the Earth International, one of the world’s largest grassroots environmental organizations, is partnering with Bumblebee Watch to deliver this first ever Great Canadian bumblebee count.

The bee count is a way to help inform the ambitious citizen-science project Bumblebee Watch, which is a collaborative effort to track and conserve North America’s bumblebees.

Bumblebees are effective pollinators for many of the crops we eat and for many of the wildflowers in our fields and forests, but several of their species are dramatically declining.

Though there are over 40 confirmed species of bumblebees in Canada, they have little proper monitoring.

Anyone can help keep track of and protect these bees by participating in the Great Canadian Bumblebee Count and joining Bumblebee Watch today.  All you need is a camera and some curiosity to find the bees in your area.
