Nigel Cornwall will give an illustrated presentation tonight (May 3) about the Marine Life Sanctuaries Society (MLSS) of B.C. whose goal is to create true no-take marine sanctuaries in British Columbia.
His presentation is part of the monthly meeting of the Sunshine Coast Natural History Society starting at 7:30 p.m. at the Sunshine Coast Arts Centre in Sechelt.
Using direct community programming, MLSS promotes the benefits of creating marine sanctuaries. Beach interpreters are used to educate communities on what there is to see in our oceans and why it needs protection. Currently MLSS is seeking support from individuals and groups to participate in choosing not to predate specific areas vital to the replenishment of fish stocks and the retention of unique marine life, such as the recently discovered marine sponges in Howe Sound and in the waters off the Sunshine Coast.
Cornwall has been passionate about marine biology since he was five. He studied marine biology in Tampa, Fla. and went on to study marine pollution chemistry in Liverpool, UK. He has dived around the world, ridden on the back of Giant Mantas and fed huge Potato Cod. Since he arrived in B.C. 10 years ago, he has been passionately involved with the Vancouver Aquarium, Nature Vancouver and the Marine Life Sanctuaries Society.
