The Sechelt Legion has dedicated all of the proceeds from its meat draws and 50/50 draws in May to support Ukrainian refugees settling on the Sunshine Coast. On May 7, the Legion was honoured to host Daria Anico-Tavares and Judy Rother. Daria, a Ukrainian emigré who settled in Gibsons just prior to the COVID epidemic, spoke of the impact of the war from a very personal perspective, and how touched she feels by the outpouring of support of the Legion and others on the Sunshine Coast. Daria and  Judy Rother are spearheading efforts to assist eight Ukrainian families settling on the lower Sunshine Coast, and spoke of the challenges they will face.

For Legion President Bill McLean, “It’s a great way for the Legion to give back locally. All of us have had the urge to do something since the war started. The members are excited about this fundraising effort, adding extra ways to increase revenues.  And, we are hosting a Burger and Beer along with a silent auction on the 11th of June, with all proceeds dedicated to this exceptional cause.”

Last Saturday’s efforts raised more than $1,200. Draws are held every Saturday from 4 to 6 p.m., and everyone is welcome.  Come on out and support the cause!
