The British Columbia and Yukon Community Newspapers Association (BCYCNA) will award some of the largest scholarships in British Columbia and Yukon again this year.
Every high school graduating student in B.C. and Yukon is eligible for the $5,000 in scholarships, making them some of the most accessible awards currently available. This is the tenth year in a row the BCYCNA has brought much-needed funds to students seeking post-secondary education.
Scholarships of $3,500, $1,000, and $500 will be awarded to the three students who best answer the question, "How could your local paper partner with the youth in your community to make a positive difference?"
Students must submit a 500-word essay to Coast Reporter by April 23, when one local finalist will be chosen. The finalists' essays will then be forwarded to the BCYCNA where the top three scholarship winners will be selected.
Send entries to Coast Reporter editor Ian Jacques via email [email protected] or call 604-885-4811, ext. 228 for more information.
"The BCYCNA is pleased to once again provide graduating high school students across BC and Yukon with the opportunity to receive considerable scholarship awards," said Scott Nelson, president of the BCYCNA. "One of BCYCNA's member initiatives is to be able to make this kind of contribution to the young people who live in the communities we serve."
The BCYCNA is a non-profit membership organization that was established in 1922. The association represents 117 community newspapers across British Columbia and Yukon with a combined readership of over 2.5 million.
The three scholarships will be awarded to the winners at their graduating ceremony by a representative of their local community newspaper.
