At the invitation of the Sechelt Seniors Activity Centre, MLA Nicholas Simons and parliamentary secretary for seniors Anne Kang paid an informal visit to the centre on June 13.
It was an opportunity for the two parliamentarians to share a lunch with the centre’s members in the new dining room, and to speak directly with seniors and hear what is on their minds. Overheard topics of conversation included the water crisis on the Sunshine Coast, recycling issues, funding the centre’s expansion project, logging, and meal services for seniors.
Simons and Kang also stopped in on various activities at the centre during their two-and-a-half-hour visit. They were able to observe yoga, carpet bowling, mahjong and painting, and talk one-on-one with some of the participants.
Both Simons and Kang concurred that a community which provides a safe and welcoming setting for a variety of activities where seniors can participate and socialize makes for a healthier community and requires both strong local and government support.
The centre thanked the visiting politicians for agreeing to this more casual format for a visit and asked that they take the concerns they heard back to Victoria with them.
