Pender Harbour-Egmont highlights: Wooden Boat Show sets sail this weekend

Happy BC Day weekend! The Pender Harbour Wooden Boat Show launches this evening Friday, Aug. 2, continuing Saturday and Sunday at Millenium Park. The weekend features  heritage boats, exhibits, music, speakers, and food starting off with the Boat Parade at 5:30 p.m. Harbour Lights! the Pender Harbour Choir’s variety show, with acts from comedy, sea shanties, singer mashups, flute, harp, and guitar. Delicious home-made desserts available. $10 suggested donation. Doors open at 7 p.m. at the School of Music. Show begins at 7:30 p.m. 

Saturday, sailboat races, Storytime Theatre by the Driftwood Players, speaker series with presentations from Bill Noon and Howard White, Hard Hat Diving exhibition and face painting with Miss Carla and boat building for the kids. 

Sunday, marine tailgate sale. At 12:30 p.m. there’s the HUGS ukulele concert. At 1 p.m. speaker Isaac Vanderhorst shares tales of the grand yachts of the past. Blue Heron Canoe draw is at 2 p.m. 

Just a reminder the boat ramp at the Madeira Park marina in Millenium Park will be unavailable during the hours of 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 3, and 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 4. Please plan ahead and consider using Coho, John Henry’s, or Coopers Green ramps during these times. 

Seniors Initiative activities for August continue with Chair Yoga Mondays and Fridays 11 a.m. to noon at the Hall and Wednesdays 11 a.m. to noon at Sarah Wray Hall with Carole Logtenberg. Carpet Bowling Wednesdays 1 to 3 p.m. at the Hall. Drop-in fee $3. Harbourside Friendships Thursday, Aug. 8 will include a presentation of Loving-Kindness Meditation with Neora Snitz 10:30 a.m. at the Hall. Lunch served at noon for $10 per person. 

For the coming season, the Pender Harbour Choir has a call out for a rehearsal pianist. Season starts Sept. 10, 7 to 8:30 p.m., and continue on select select Tuesdays in collaboration with the concert pianist, at the School of Music. This is a paid position with the choir. Gunboat Bay Blues on the Dock, a special summer concert, once again generously hosted by Kennith Mellquist, will be Saturday, Aug. 10, starting at 5 p.m. Enjoy great music while on the water, deck, and docks in the bay. 

The Rotary Club of Pender Harbour presents the 19th Annual Peoples Choice Show & Shine, Sunday, Aug. 11 at the Legion. All makes and models of cars, trucks, and motorcycles welcome. Registration is 9:30 to 11:30 a.m., Show time 11:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. Entry fee $30, All proceeds go to Rotary community projects in the Harbour. This is a great family event, come vote for your favorite car and cycle. Multiple awards to be presented. Take in the meat draw in the Legion while you wait for the winners to be announced. Food, fun & 50/50 draw in air-conditioned comfort. 

The Legion’s Annual Golf Tournament is Saturday, Aug. 17 starting at 2 p.m. The playing format is a modified Texas Scramble. Entry is $70 per person, which includes golf, appies, dinner and prizes. Everyone will receive a prize! Power carts are not included in the entry fee. Registrations are accepted at the Legion for golf and dinner while power carts must be rented at the golf course. 

The Pender Harbour Music Society Mid Summer Chamber Music weekend Aug. 17 and 18 welcomes the return of five internationally outstanding musicians. Kai Gleusteen, violin and Catherine Ordronneau, piano on Aug. 17. Joan Blackman, violin; Zoltan Rozsnyai, cello; Jane Hayes, piano on Aug. 18. Tickets available on the PHMS website.
