June 29, 1935 - February 15, 2024
Robert Barry Wainwright, son of Ralph and Ethel Kipp Wainwright, was born in Chilliwack, British Columbia on June 29, 1935. At a young age, Barry was fascinated by colour, shape and form. This led to his studies at the Vancouver School of Art, where Barry was awarded the prestigious Emily Carr Travel Study Scholarship. This allowed him to further his art studies at Atelier 17 in Paris with Stanley William Hayter, during the mid-1960's. Upon returning to Canada, Barry became an Associate Professor of Fine Arts at Concordia University, Montreal, teaching printmaking for 30 years, until his retirement in 1996. In 1997 he returned to BC, choosing Sechelt as home, and continued his passion for creating and exhibiting art.
Barry was a loving husband to Frances, father to Carla and Julian, and "Grampy" to Liam, Amélie, Cléo, Edan and Ivy.
