October 3, 1928 - March. 11, 2025
In aisle 10 at Claytons', there is a photo of Phyllis and her sister Peggy running along Cowrie Street as fast as they can. The photo is from 1932 - Phyllis grew up in Sechelt, the daughter of Edric and Florrie Clayton before electricity or telephone had arrived. In order to finish high school and complete her teacher training, she had to move to Vancouver when she was 16. Phyllis taught in a Doukhobor colony in the Kootenays and then in Victoria, where she met her husband, Roy, an officer in the Navy. Phyllis and Roy lived in various locations around Canada and Europe while their family grew. After many years away, she and Roy moved back to Sechelt, where she took over The Upstairs & Downstairs Shoppe. She was a fixture at Trail Bay Centre until her late '80s. Phyllis was a lifetime member of St. Hilda's Church, where she sang in the choir. She was a passionate flower grower and loved spending time by the sea. She enjoyed many trips to places around the world. She will be remembered by many for her kindness, warm personality and beautiful smile. Predeceased by her husband Roy and sister Peg Hemstreet, Phyllis leaves behind her brothers, Dick Clayton and John (Maureen) Clayton, and her children, Bruce (Marg) Morris, Diane (Terry) Brookes and David Morris. She was a loving grandmother and great-grandmother. Our heartfelt thanks to the staff at Christenson Village and Silverstone Care Centre for their compassionate care. If you would like to donate in her name, please consider St. Hilda's Anglican Church (www.sthilda.ca) or a charity of your choice. There will be a memorial service later this spring.
