September 19, 1941 - May 24, 2024

It is with sadness I announce the passing of Karl, my husband and best friend, at home, in dignity, on his own terms. Karl emigrated from Germany in 1957 at the age of 15 with his parents but was soon involved in construction projects all over BC, eventually settling down to earn his Bachelor of Commerce from UBC. In 1968 he married Barbara (nee Orr) and they settled in North Van. In 1970 they quit their jobs, travelled across Canada by train then on a freighter to Belgium and rambled around Europe in that wonderful age of $5 a day, without itinerary or bookings. Back to Canada months later and back to work. Karl decided he hated working in an office and they moved to an acreage in Langley where he formed his own construction company and found his niche. A chance visit to the Sunshine Coast to visit friends led to the purchase of a small farm in 1987 and they moved in January 1989 with dogs, cats, sheep and chickens. Karl commuted to West Van for 14 years, building houses. He loved fishing in the days of plentiful, fish enjoying special times at Campbell River and Haida Gwai resorts. They spent many winter vacations in Hawaii, including this January. When the farm became too much, they designed and had their aging-in-place home built nearby and Karl enjoyed his retirement years until his quality of life diminished. Karl is survived by his wife of 56 years, Barbara, sister-in-law Marjorie Ann and husband Timothy Malcolm, sister-in-law Louise Paulus, many nieces, nephews and their families, residing in Canada, the USA, Great Britain and Switzerland. He is predeceased by his Paulus siblings, Dieter, Ingeborg, Werner, Hans, Kurt, and brotherin-law Jack Orr. With grateful thanks to St. Paul’s Kidney Clinic team, Dr. Werb, the Sunshine Coast Palliative Care team, Dr. Nimmo, Dr. Wadge and Nurse Jen. No service by request. A. gathering will be held at a later date.
