The Pender Harbour Lions Club is getting in the garlic spirit for its inaugural Summer Garlic Festival.

The festival takes place Saturday, Aug. 28, from 9 a.m. to 10 p.m. and Sunday, Aug. 29 from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. in Lions Park and promises fun for the whole family. The festival will feature garlicky food, organic produce, a wide variety of interesting artisans and vendors, a horseshoe tournament, lots of stuff for children including horseback rides supplied by the Malaspina Ranch, a bouncing castle, face painting and children's games.

"We have wonderful music supplied by some of the Sunshine Coast's best artists, including Penny Lang, Joe Stanton and the Precious Littles, Katherine Rowlands, Gaetan and the French Connection, Larrie Cook and the Bluesmasters, Angie McCauley with Dave Groom, Cat in the Middle, and Katie and the Cornpones," said Neale Smith, Lions Club vice president. "Of course, all the money the Lions Club raises goes back into the community to help fund good causes and help out those in need."

Last year, for example, the Lions donated money to St. Mary's Hospital, the Pender Health Clinic, an elementary school student suffering from cancer, student bursaries and other worthwhile causes.

"Our small club has been working tremendously hard to make this fundraiser a success, and we hope the whole community will come out and support it," Smith said.
