Harbour / Egmont Highlights: Volunteers are vital in the Harbour – here’s how to join

And other goings on
Pender Harbour

If you read last week’s column you may have noticed an emphasis on the word volunteer in regards to the most enjoyable events and the expert handling of catastrophic ones. The full fantastic life we live here in our harbour is because of our volunteers. Think about it. I encourage everyone who hasn’t volunteered to make an effort to do so. Go big or go small, an hour, a day or more. The choices are endless. If you need help choosing just ask me. At one point I was onboard with eight charities and there are tireless, generous folks doing far more.

Now, how about this? Looking to help your community doing something fun this summer? Volunteer at the Visitor Centre in Madeira Park! Provide information to happy tourists from all over the world looking for adventures, activities, and sights to see in our area. No sales, just lots of chatting with tourists while handing out maps and guides. You will receive training and be able to choose what days and hours work best for you. Call 604-883-2561 or email [email protected] for more info, via the Pender Harbour Chamber of Commerce.

Harbour Gallery will be open 7 days a week throughout July and August, beginning this Saturday, July 1 Canada Day 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. The Gallery is in the cluster of the lovely, revitalized Forestry buildings and gardens including the School of Music and Reading Centre up the few stairs from the Millenium Seafarers Park and government dock at the harbour’s edge. The creations are from our very talented local artists in endless mediums, sizes, and price points.

The Egmont Thrift Store is looking for help, yes, volunteers for many simple tasks. Contact  them through Facebook Messenger. Dina, you have created a fantastic template, top drawer, and your dedication, immeasurable. Thank you! Saying you will be missed is an understatement. All the best, Dina.

EarthFair Bookstore is now open Mondays. Whether you’re a gardener, naturalist, chef, carpenter, adventurer, or just an avid reader, your next read is waiting for you. The kids’ selection is delightful as are the gifts for all ages. The EarthFair Store is owned and operated by the Ruby Lake Lagoon Nature Reserve Society. All proceeds go to the Society and to the operation of the Iris Griffith Field Studies and Interpretive Centre. Enroll at EarthFair or online for this summer’s kids’ nature camp for 7 to 11-year-olds hosted at the Iris and Billy Griffith’s Nature Centre throughout July and August.

Well, I just did my orientation and first shift at The Visitor Centre. When I found out they didn’t receive a grant for the season I signed up. Was great fun! LOL, I am almost up to eight again. My first volunteer effort was this column, 12 years ago in appreciation for where I live.

Happy Canada Day! I am so thankful to live in this community among some of the best Canadians.
