Hello, stormy Halfmoon Bay! If it were a competition, I’d say we won the “most beat-up” award in last week’s storm. We all experienced major inconveniences that we usually only experience while watching the news from the comforts of our cozy homes –– this time, we were the news! A tornado, HMB?!
And as I write this, Tuesday afternoon, exactly a week from the previous big storm, I feel I’m in a race to finish against an inevitable power outage. Hello, global warming; we’re not in “Kansas” anymore…
I’ve spoken to many people since who’ve acknowledged that these storms have been a big eye-opener as to how little we’re prepared for power outages and natural disasters. I was very envious of our neighbour with the generator but I was extremely grateful for our gas stove for cooking and wood-burning fireplace for heat. With the more intense weather patterns arising, there’s no better time than now to start accumulating emergency supplies –– extra batteries, heat sources that aren’t dependent on electricity, generators, first aid kits, non-perishable food and bottles of water.
This will be my last column, and we’re still looking for a full-time Halfmoon Bay columnist, so if you currently live in Halfmoon Bay and are interested in being the voice of the community, please contact [email protected]. Thank you for the opportunity to share my voice, and I’ll see you around!
I’ll leave you with some happy happenings from previous resident and HMB writer Linda McMahon:
HMB Cultural Cooperative: An exciting project is in the works! A group of residents are generating conversation about the viability of a “cultural cooperative” made up of artists, musicians and other creatives living in Halfmoon Bay. The idea is that the cooperative members would organize and participate in various public activities connecting the talent with the community. We have a wide variety of popular local talent but many of us don’t realize they are actually residents of Halfmoon Bay.
To test the waters, on Saturday, Nov. 30, a free open house event, the “Art Wheel,” is being held at Coopers Green Hall. It will allow artists to showcase their work and interact with fellow artists and the public in the evening, seats are sold out for a performance by the Soul Sessions, a West Coast trio (with close connections to HMB) that blends gospel, soul and R&B. An acoustic jam session will take place earlier in the afternoon and a poetry reading by a local author is planned. Artists wishing to be involved in the open house (and the cultural cooperative) should email [email protected]. So save the date and check on the events on the Halfmoon Bay BC Everything Facebook page for updates.
