Hi, everyone! Hope you all had a wonderful week as we endured another heatwave albeit not as intense or as long as the previous ones.

Last week, three members of the Halfmoon Bay Volunteer Fire Department responded to a minor grass fire in George Cormack Park on Mintie Road. This is a small neighbourhood park located a short distance from the Halfmoon Bay General Store and several homes along Mintie and O’Brien Roads. Firefighters were able to control and extinguish the fire quickly and continued to monitor the area for a short time after. It was noted that the possible cause may have been a discarded cigarette. The park is a popular spot for visitors to walk along the short trail or to sit at the picnic table to enjoy lunch or just to relax and people watch. Visitors are reminded to extinguish cigarettes using their own receptacle or better yet, refrain from smoking anywhere in the park and surrounding area. It goes without saying (but I’ll say it anyway), everything is so tinder dry at the moment, we should all be extra careful and mindful while in our parks, on trails, and on roadways. Thank you to our wonderful volunteer firefighters for being there, yet again, to continue to keep us safe.

That four-letter word is just around the corner: fall. Although it’s hard to believe given the hot, dry weather we are having at the moment, it may be time to start thinking about what to plant in the veggie garden and switch to hardier plants in the yard. In Halfmoon Bay there are two nurseries to choose from for all your gardening needs. Kym’s Plants and Halfmoon Bay Nursery are brimming with a wide variety of plants, shrubs, trees, planting supplies and much more. Currently, Kym’s Plants has some fall veggies, fall hanging baskets and tropical plants available. Visit 7910 Fawn Rd. and enjoy a walk in the greenhouse or the outdoor plant area. You will be sure to find good quality, hardy plants to love and care for in your own garden. If you have any questions, call 604-740-0056 or send an email to [email protected].

Halfmoon Bay Nursery is at 7820 Fawn Rd and along with seasonal plants, bulk garden soil, fertilizers, irrigation items and so much more. Banana trees are currently on sale until August 31. Prices range from $14 to $75, purchase two trees of any size and receive a 15% discount off both. Be sure to stop by and see these beautiful trees and check out all they have to offer.
