It’s Mother’s Day this weekend. For Linda McMahon, that means celebrating her mother Barbara Wallis, seen here at the Sunshine Coast Botanical Garden.

Mom and I are going to see Elvis! Stojko that is! As a Mother’s Day gift, I’m bringing mom to the Stars on Ice show in Vancouver on the 14th. She’s been a fan since Elvis came on the scene in the 1990s and quadruple toe-looped his way into skating stardom.

Reflecting on my relationship with mom, I’m reminded of how much we have in common; a connection of kindred spirits navigating life together. We enjoy reading historical fiction novels (lately we’re into Canadian author Cathy Marie Buchanan). Our love of reading isn’t just about the stories themselves but the conversations they spark and the excitement of recommending books to each other. We relish our movie nights, cleaning up after dinner, getting all comfy in front of the TV, and sometimes indulging in a sweet dessert. (Mom often says, “I know I shouldn’t but….!” She hasn’t turned one down yet!) We share a love for music. Mom knows many of the ‘70s classics; so I know she’s going to love the Candlelight Concert featuring Queen we’re going to in June. Mom introduced me to golf 10+ years ago and has joined the gals and me at Blue Ocean on several occasions. We’re great travel buddies! Since I moved here in 2020, we’ve discovered hidden gems, devoured plant-based fare at favourite restaurants, marveled at Vancouver’s architecture and the Coast’s natural beauty and soaked in the vibrant energy of urban and rural B.C. life. From spontaneous adventures to planned outings, our explorations have brought us closer together and given us many unforgettable experiences. Things aren’t always peachy in mom and daughter land but as we get to know each other in a deeper sense, the more patient and compassionate we’ve become. I wouldn’t want it any other way! Happy Mother’s Day, mom.

The Saturday Sechelt Farmers’ and Artisans’ Market is the perfect place to shop for Mother’s Day. Market manager Tori invites you to visit the market’s “potters, crafters, artists, makers, bakers and growers” for locally crafted, unique gifts. And don’t forget the auxiliary’s craft, plant and bake sale at the Trail Bay Mall on Saturday also, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.! Can’t make it to Sechelt? Drop by the Halfmoon Bay General Store and the nurseries in Welcome Woods, where you’ll find a great selection of locally sourced products.

News from two of Halfmoon Bay’s associations:
