Greetings Creekers, it is Friday, Dec. 20 as I write and there is anticipation and a kind of giddiness in the air as we get closer to Christmas. Shopping is shifting from gift stores to supermarkets as everyone stocks up for their special meal and by the time you read this you will done! Enough with the brussels sprouts, the candied yams and roast beast. You will never care to see a shortbread cookie or chocolate turtle again, at least until next year. Nevertheless, I hope that you all had the opportunity to share a special meal with friends and family and that warmth and laughter filled the room.
New Years is on its way and who knows what 2025 will bring, although I can tell you one thing for certain, I will no longer be writing this column. It was a hard decision for me. Apart from a COVID project that involved writing stories about inanimate objects around my house, I have never written before. I found I liked it but I did it flying by the seat of my pants, always late and in a panic. I rarely had a plan in advance, researched on the fly. It reminded me of high school and why my university career was short. Really though, I am fortunate to have a very busy life and lots of interests, but I am not keeping up. So it’s time to let someone else take over but first of all I would like to thank Bronwyn Beairsto, the editor of Coast Reporter. She has been encouraging, flexible and patient.
Meghan Styles has kindly volunteered to take over and she will be your new columnist. I have not met Meghan yet, but I have heard from numerous people that she is an excellent writer. Meghan has lived in Roberts Creek for five years and has two children, one attending Chatelech and one at Roberts Creek School where her husband also teaches. She works in leadership development and also teaches yoga at her studio on Mossy Rock. Meghan will represent a younger generation and I look forward to that. I encourage you to read her columns and support her by sending her information on Creek happenings.
Thank you to everyone who has given me encouragement and feedback during the past two years. I would not stayed with it without you. My wish for all of us in Roberts Creek is that we appreciate our community in all its diversity and that we work hard to maintain its character by supporting local businesses and organizations such as the Roberts Creek Community Association and the Library and that we remember and honour our history.
