Feel the need to shake your thing and get sweaty on these far too few summer nights we have? No better time or place than this Saturday, July 30, 9 p.m. to 1 a.m. as the Roberts Creek Legion #219 hosts Summer Times, a Project Future Presentation with Bridge/The Funkdealer/Mieke Jay and Guests. Summer vibez with deep and dirty bass will make it a classic hiphop, dancehall, dubstep, grime, bassline, garage, house, dnb, future bass, dripping dance floor night! Mieke Jay will make things look great with far out visuals. Tickets: $15 guests / $10 members.
As the summer picks up speed and seems to be rushing away, there is always Sunday afternoon behind the library for a respite from the hubbub. Slow Sundays this week has ukulele group Loose Endings (brought to Hawaii by Portuguese sailors in 1879, the instrument is neither Hawaiian nor from Ucluelet) Following the Ukes is youth singer songwriter Kaishan Cowie, youth jazz trio Kelough’s Krumbs, The Amazing Celso Machado (with surprise guest artist!) and Annagram – Anna Lumiere, piano, Graham Ord, sax, plus friends – to finish up the show, July 31 at noon. Bring a chair, a drink and come slow down for a wee bit.
Now back to Legion #219: Also on Sunday – Still Spirits is a special performance of six-piece Maple Ridge-based yardcore band. They have been slinging bluegrass, shaken, not stirred, with the energy of that genre known as punk rock (some of you may know of my extensive history with said genre), all across Western Canada, lighting up dance floors and holding backyard barn burners. I can assure you your local volunteer fire department will be on high alert for this one! Advance tickets at robertscreeklegion.com. Members $10, guests of members $20. At the door: Members $15 / Guests $25. Get pumped for the show at www.StillSpirits.Bandcamp.com.
