Greetings Creekers, sometimes I have a column plan and can just launch right in, but this morning I am procrastinating, walking around my house in circles picking things up but steadfastly avoiding greasy, dusty areas shown up by those lovely rays of winter sunlight. If I pay attention, I will get involved in a days-long cleaning spree and who has time for that? I prefer to walk in the sunlight and that will be my goal for today, after I have filled you in on any interesting Creek happenings.
No matter how one celebrates the season, there is hustle and bustle involved. Hopefully it’s happy hustle and bustle but you might still find yourselves in need of a cooking break. That’s where the Hall kitchen comes in. Since the completion of the new commercial kitchen various people have been renting it, preparing delicious food and baking that you can buy to take home for a yummy and easy dinner.
On Mondays it’s Butta La Pasta. Founded by Maryem and Cesarino, this pastificio is dedicated to bringing you authentic Italian pasta and sauces. Everything is made from scratch with no additives. It’s a mix and match concept where you choose from a fresh pasta and match it with an artisanal sauce of your choosing. You can drop by the Hall from four to six and see what’s available but it’s better if you make a pre-order : Facebook - Butta la pasta; Instagram - @Buttala.la.pasta.sechelt; email [email protected]; phone 604-740-2098.
Just eight months ago, Lilia Kutryk arrived from Ukraine and started looking for a job. In Ukraine, Lillia baked and decorated cakes and after friends here tasted her baking they encouraged her to start a business featuring her baking and pierogies and Leila’s Sweet and Savory was born.
They cook on Tuesdays and custom orders can be picked up then. Additionally, they sell a changing selection of pierogies, potato pancakes and crepes, along with sweets like walnut cake and tiramisu at the Hall Wednesday Market. They have gluten free and vegan options. They can do Ukrainian meals and special-order cakes for celebrations. To order, go to robertscreekcommunity.com/food-vendors or drop by and talk to Lilia.
Kati Dewar and her Nomadic Kitchen are coming to the Hall on Wednesdays. Katie is no newbie to this gig, and this home-grown Creeker has been cooking and catering around the Coast for years. If you have ever been to an event catered by her, you would remember. The food is healthy, well-prepared and always an unexpected fusion of flavours. Nomadic Kitchen will be using the Hall to prepare pre-ordered meals for pick up or delivery, from 4 to 6 p.m. on Wednesdays, beginning Dec. 11. Check the website for updated information, thenomadickitchen.ca.
On Thursdays, it’s our very own queen of spices, Rashmi, with her Curry in the Creek. She has a loyal following so it’s important to pre-order. Pick up is from 3:30 to 6:30 p.m. and you can pre-order at 604-828-4086; [email protected]; curryinthecreek.com.
These are hardworking people trying to support themselves by preparing good food for you that you can pick right in the Creek or even get delivered so give them a try.
It’s getting colder and the RCCA coat rack is back up outside the library. If you have any spare cold weather gear that someone else could use, bring it down. The donated clothing is free for anyone needing it.
Well, it’s going to be a dynamic weekend at the Legion. Tonight, from Vancouver, it’s Matchbox Bluze. They have been together for 12 years playing Chicago style ‘60s blues. Show at 8 p.m. Members $10, guests $15
Tomorrow night it’s a Neon Party. Yes that’s right. Get out those glow sticks, find some neon makeup and clothes (the unimaginative could wear their safety vest?) and head down for UK Bass and Reggae Drum & Bass with DJs Album Arthan, Chakrapher and Mr. Music. I don’t know exactly what this is but I can guess. Not only are they offering free ear plugs but you can get free chocolates too! Showtime 9 p.m. Members $10, guests $15. Coming up this Thursday, Jazz Night is Groove Syndicate featuring Peter Van Deursen on the Hammond B organ.
Next Friday night Coastal Sound Club is presenting Anna Morgan with Micheal Red and Project Future. Anna has a long and very impressive bio that you can read about on the Legion website and that’s where you can reserve a ticket too. For a more low-key and homey night out don’t forget Wednesday open mic, where various pop up musicians will be matched with various pop-up cooks offering homemade soup and a bun for $6.
As you scratch your head trying to think of the perfect gift for your cousin Ludwig, don’t forget RCCA swag! We have ball caps and toques (with a slug logo!) for $30, black zip front hoodies for $60 and new for this Christmas, Tim Clapp designed Roberts Creek T- shirts for $25. Selling these is one of those responsibilities that I half took on but have not been living up to. I am unorganised BUT if you contact me. I will get right on it and meet you with whatever you would like to purchase.
And that’s only one reason why someone else needs to write this column. Think about it. There is all kinds of creative opportunity. Write to me mounseyyvonne @gmail.com.
