Gumboot Nation: Halloween fun: Monster Mash, Eek in the Creek, trick o’ treating

And, follow up Halloween festivities with Nov. 3 Lumina Fest

Greetings Creekers!

I hope you all survived last weekend’s deluge and got out on the Art Crawl. I was only able to do one day, but I saw some exciting and inspiring work of all kinds. I would like to recognize Linda Williams and the Coast Cultural Alliance for all the work they do to organize this wonderful event.

The other big deal last weekend was of course the election. I worked a long day at the hall and while we don’t yet know the outcome, I can tell you that in Roberts Creek we had a very large turnout so congratulations to everyone who got out and cast their ballot. It included many young people who I remember from their elementary school days and it was a pleasure to see them, all grown up!

On Sunday afternoon there was a disaster preparation workshop. I was not able to be there but I heard reports of a good turnout although there was disappointment at the low number of younger people from our community. A large earthquake could happen here anytime and we are all aware of the dangers of forest fire. This is an issue that is not going away and there are a group of people working on initiatives to encourage neighbourhood preparedness. I will write about these as they come up but in the meantime, here is a small, but practical tip: get an old pair of shoes, attach them to your bed frame so they won’t wander away and stick a flashlight in them. If something happens in the night, you will be protected from broken glass and won’t be stumbling around in the dark.

Halloween is coming and lots of things are happening so here is a reminder of some things coming up this weekend and on the 31st.

If you want to dress up and dance, there are two great opportunities at the Legion. On Friday, it’s Halloween Monster Mash with the Interstellar Riders and The Hook and on Saturday it’s Captain Fantasy and the Muffdusters. For those who missed this last week, on Saturday at 5 p.m., the Sunshine Coast Community Orchestra and Concert Band will be performing a family Halloween concert at the Roberts Creek School gym. Something to do with your kids before you drop them with the sitter and head out to boogie!

Sechelt has their dancing witches but Roberts Creek has the Henderson Beach Witches Paddle! Head down at noon this Sunday to watch or participate. All witches are welcome, just be sure to dress up and bring your board. This is a weather-dependent activity.

On the 31st it’s EEK the CREEK!, the RCCA’s annual family Halloween celebration at the hall. There will be treats, games and a monster mash dance party. Semir’s Hot Dogs will be there and it all takes place from 2 to 5 p.m. Help is needed for this event and you can sign up at volunteersignup.org/XHXA7.

Then it’s trick or treating. Many of us don’t get kids coming round but there are other neighbourhoods, like Mossy Rock, that get hit with hundreds. They shut the street and go all out with the decorations. The rest of us can support them by contributing bags of treats that can be dropped off at the Roberts Creek Community School Office.

Speaking of the Roberts Creek Community School, they are planning Lumina Fest, a fundraiser celebration to support community programs in the Legacy Garden. It is the time of year that many cultures celebrate the approaching dark and cold of winter with festivals of light and so on Sunday, Nov. 3, the community is invited to participate in a three-part event.

Lantern making –– 2 to 4 p.m. Come and make your own beautiful lantern. Please bring a glass jar and all other materials are provided. Donations are per lantern on a suggested sliding scale of $10 to $15. Children under 10 must be accompanied by an adult.

Community concert –– 4 to 5 p.m. Dallas and Sharon, “Sonic Soulmates,” will debut at Lumina Fest. Indie Pop meets Hip Hop in their blend of acoustic guitar, ukulele and uplifting lyrics. Enjoy complimentary refreshments and dance while the lanterns dry.

Lantern Walk –– 5:30 p.m. People will walk with their lanterns in celebration of community and light. This sounds like a wonderful event that could become a tradition. Volunteers are needed and if you would like to help contact Alexis at [email protected]

Heads up to all you bookkeepers. The RCCA has a small job for one of you. It involves three to five hours a week and if you are interested in learning more, contact Karen Spicer at [email protected]

Please write to me and let me know what’s going on. [email protected].
