Gumboot Nation: Creekers weather the rain for community photo

Also, playing tourist along the Coast this weekend

Greetings Creekers!

I don’t know what the weather will be by the time you read this but right now it’s soggy and chilly and feels more like November than almost June. I know we need rain, but really, there are limits. In an optimistic spirit I had stashed my sweaters and replaced them with tank tops and summery frocks. Silly me! Now I am rummaging through Rubbermaid bins. But Creekers are a hardy bunch and I see you out there gardening in your rain gear. Sadly, I had to miss the community photo on Sunday but I drove by as people were gathering. It was pouring rain, yet there were cars everywhere and families in full-on rain gear trudging up the hill with smiles on their faces. I felt a surge of pride. Nothing was going to put people off from appearing in the hall photo. It speaks to the importance of community.

Another, even smaller community, but with a big sense of pride, is Egmont. This Saturday is Egmont Day and if the rain stops it could be a nice opportunity for a leisurely, windy drive up the Coast. Events include an 8:30 a.m. fishing derby and a parade at 11 a.m., followed by a BBQ. There will be music, vendors and games. A low key, small town celebration that you could follow up with a lovely forest walk into Skookumchuck.

In the spirit of playing tourist here are a couple of other events this weekend that might get you venturing out of your gardens:

Saturday, Persephone will be celebrating the start of Pride Month with a big Pride Kick Off Party featuring food, beverages, live music and chickens (??) Maybe you play with them or eat them? Go and find out and celebrate our diverse community. Noon to 5 p.m.

In the other direction, also on Saturday, it’s a Taste of Sechelt, which means you can wander around town with a glass of B.C. wine and buy $8 bites from various cafes and restaurants. From noon to 4 p.m.

There are lots of things happening up and down the Coast that you can find out about online, by subscribing to the Coast Cultural Alliance and in this paper, but there are a couple in particular that I would like to mention.

A Cappella Strait is celebrating 40 years of singing together. Janice Brunson has been conducting them all that time as well as Choralations Childrens Choir. They will be presenting two joint concerts, Friday at St Hilda’s in Sechelt and Saturday at St. Bart’s in Gibsons. Both concerts are at 7 p.m. Tickets $20 by etransfer to [email protected] or at the door. Many Creekers and their children have been members of these two groups over the years.

Another group that a number of Creekers are involved in is the Sunshine Community Orchestra. If you missed their spring concert in Sechelt last week, you can still catch them when they perform in Pender Harbour Community Hall this Sunday, June 2 at 2:30 p.m. Tickets $20 at the door. Children free.

The Sunshine Coast Ocean Festival starts this weekend. There will be a week of free events, including films, Online Nemo talks, citizen science events and culminating with the celebration of World Oceans Day next Saturday at Friendship Park in Sechelt. Go to sunshinecoastoceanfestival.ca for all the details.

At the Roberts Creek Legion on Friday night, The Henrys will be presenting their tribute to The Band. On Saturday all you hip hop, punk rappers can head down to enjoy Super Kawaii, an IDOL group from Vancouver.

At the Gumboot on Sunday from 5 to 7 p.m., renowned Canadian songwriters Andy Stochansky and Jody Quine will be playing two intimate sets. Tickets are $20 at the door and what a nice thing to do before Sunday dinner.

Have a great week!
