Greetings Creekers!
I have been cruising local pages on Facebook in a last minute attempt to catch up on local events and there are so many spectacular photos of the Aurora Borealis. Everyone I know saw it and it seems most of the rest of the world did to, but not me. Apparently, I was in the wrong spot, or maybe I was looking in the wrong direction. I am always confused about north. Really, I probably just didn’t stay up late enough and now I am kicking myself for missing out. So, congratulations to those who got it right and thank you for sharing your photos.
Speaking of photos, I dropped by the Gumboot Cafe today to look at the latest art exhibit. Kasia Lambert is a long time Creek resident and artist and “Women Love Flowers” is a display of digital collages dedicated to Olga Towert, who for over 25 years delighted us all with her Creekside Garden on Lower Road. I loved this exhibit and I encourage you to stop in for a coffee at the Gumboot and enjoy it. It comes down on May 31.
While there, I noticed three posters for upcoming music events so I inquired and yes! the Gumboot is getting back into doing some live shows. For years, they did this and we had the opportunity to see and hear some remarkable local and touring musicians in an intimate setting. So, keep your eyes and ears open for future concerts. In the meantime, three upcoming ones are:
June 1: The Empty Streets – some of our best local musicians have come together to form this indie/roots band. Doors at 6 p.m. Show at 7 p.m. Ticket $20 at eventbrite.ca.
June 2: The Goods – Andy Stochansky and Jody Quine, two of Canada’s best songwriters will do a two-set acoustic show, 5 to 7 p.m. Tickets $20 at the door.
June 10: Repair and Trenchraid from Saskatoon will be putting on an all-ages show at 6 p.m. Tickets $10 at the door.
While we are on the subject of music, I should mention some upcoming shows at the Legion.
Friday (that’s tonight!), local musician Graham William and Friends will be having a good time and you can join them! Tickets at the door, p.m.
Saturday after the Canucks game and going until late the Steve Hinton Band will fill the dance floor with swing, shuffle and rhumba!
Moving ahead to next weekend:
Friday, May 24: Gisto and the Grateful Living will be getting everyone up dancing with their reggae / affro beat. Call for advance tickets
Saturday, May 25: Teflo and guests – no details available yet
Tomorrow evening (May 18) Youssoupha Sidibee will be appearing concert at the Hall. He is a Grammy award nominated musician from Senegal and virtuoso on the kora, that wonderful African string instrument. There will be additional music by Amir Aziz and this should be a remarkable evening. By the time you read this advance ticket sales are likely to be over although you can try amiraziz.tickit.ca otherwise they will be available at the door.
Okay, all good Creekers want to be in the community photo! The next one is being taken on the occasion of the Hall’s 90th Birthday on May 26. Show up at 11:30 a.m. and the photo will be taken at noon. So they say. I have never known that to happen and I have been in all of them. But nevermind, it is an awesome opportunity to mingle with your neighbours, see who’s with who and catch up with the latest gossip. There will cake, festivity, fun and lots of children. The evening before there will be a dance party at the Hall with Roots Roundup (tickets at roguefest,ca).
On a community note, not all of you are signed up to get Boot Tales and you are missing out. For those who don’t know, Boot Tales is a monthly newsletter that you receive by email. It is full of information about all things Creek, including a monthly report from our regional director. Sign up!
With some lazy sunny days coming up you will be needing a good book or three, so don’t forget about our library. There is an impressive collection and new books every month. Also, don’t forget the puzzle swap. You do not need to be a member to take a puzzle and you don’t even have to bring one to swap, so it’s win/win.
Have a great week ! Write to me: [email protected].
