Join UBC's Eagan Davis next Saturday, Feb. 22 at 2 p.m. for the latest low-down on dirt at the Sparling Pavilion at the Sunshine Coast Botanical Garden. Davis is a most entertaining, enthusiastic and down-to-earth speaker.
Whether you are new to gardening or a seasoned green thumb, you'll gain a better understanding of what soil is and does, plus ways to care for and enhance your own garden soil.
Tickets are on sale at the Garden at 5941 Mason Road, Sechelt, at local nurseries and the Sechelt Visitors Centre, $15 for Botanical Garden members or $20 for non-members.
CBC listeners will remember Davis's gardening advice on Sheryl McKay's North by Northwest show. He made every topic fascinating and understandable. At the time he worked as a gardener for VanDusen Botanical Garden. In September he became the instructor for UBC Botanical Garden's horticulture program.
Questions about soil that is too sandy or boggy? Should you add this or that soil amendment? Are you curious about the new research on the abundant life-form partnerships we never see below ground? It is true that an established plant can help a newly-planted one settle in? Bring a notebook.
Last fall Davis brought his whole class to volunteer at the Big Dig in North Vancouver, where 54 rhododendrons were gingerly moved from the garden of Alleyne and Barbara Cook, and hoisted onto trucks provided by District of Sechelt to come to the Sunshine Coast Botanical Garden. We know he can wield a shovel with the best of them.
With support from Sunshine Coast Credit Union, the Botanical Garden is open daily with winter hours 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Come for a winter walk - there's always something to see.
