The Sunshine Coast Botanical Garden is now open for visitors two days each week all summer.

On Wednesdays from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. and Sundays from noon to 4 p.m., the garden, located at 5941 Mason Rd. in West Sechelt, is open for walkers, families, picnickers, nature lovers, artists and anyone who wants a quiet nature break. Enter by gate three, the main parking area, marked by a red banner. A greeter will help you decide where to walk, picnic or just take a quiet green retreat.

You might want to wander along the treed perimeter path, which passes by reflecting ponds and sunny meadows and has views into the deep, shady ravine of Wakefield Creek. You'll see some very special trees including an unusual linden, a double row of Himalayan birches, and what is perhaps the largest big leaf maple in the area. The colourful and productive vegetable garden is also open for browsing and the seniors' garden is a demonstration of how, with a bit of good design and planning, gardening can be for everyone at every stage of life.

In addition, each Sunday afternoon at 2 p.m., a guided tour is offered by donation. It's an easy 45-minute stroll. The guide will tell some facts and lore about the trees, a bit of history of the 40-acre site and the plans for the Botanical Garden, and point out some particularly enticing views. Groups can book a tour by emailing [email protected].

The garden is not a manicured space, so we strongly recommend staying on the main gravel paths or marked open areas. Caution and close attention to footing are required for off-path ventures. Washrooms are open in the Sparling Pavilion.

Each year the Botanical Garden grows in interest and plantings. New this year are the gardens surrounding the Sparling Pavilion. If the building is not in use, visitors could picnic right on the terrace with a great view over the garden. Otherwise, bring a blanket and enjoy your lunch in one of the meadows. Reconnecting with nature is so good for your health and spirit - this might be your weekly green retreat.
