On Sunday, Feb. 24, a team of firefighters from the Sunshine Coast will be participating for the 12th year running in the BC Lung Association’s 18th annual Climb the Wall event – a stair climb fundraiser held at the Sheraton Vancouver Wall Centre in support of the one-in-five British Columbians who struggle with lung conditions.
“Together, Sunshine Coast firefighters have raised nearly $30,000 in support of vital lung health research, education and patient support programs over the past 12 years,” said Chris Lam, CEO of the BC Lung Association. “We’re extraordinarily grateful for their continuing support and dedication to the cause.”
Bill Higgs, the now retired fire chief for Sechelt, a veteran of the event, and consistent top fundraiser, describes Climb the Wall as a rare event.
“It allows us to come together as a firefighting community to support a worthwhile cause while demonstrating one of the most physically demanding aspects of our profession,” Higgs said.
“As firefighters, we know first-hand what it feels like to struggle to breathe, and how important it is to take steps to safeguard our lung health,” said Gibsons firefighter and 2019 climb team captain Chris Facchin. “While we take precautions and wear special gear to protect ourselves, each fire exposes us to a mix of toxic gases, chemicals, particulate and other substances that contribute to firefighters’ increased risk of respiratory disease and cancer.”
Last year organizers welcomed climbers ranging in age from seven to 80 years old. This year more than 300 climbers are anticipated – including over 100 firefighters – amongst them Team Gibsons Fire, who compete in their own competitive category and climb wearing 50 pounds of protective gear.
People of all fitness levels and all ages take part in the event. Some participants climb solo, others as part of a family or team. Participants pay a $25 registration fee and commit to fundraising a minimum of $125 in donations. In return, every climber gets a limited edition 2019 Climb the Wall T-shirt, brunch, good vibes and front row seats to some unique Sunday morning fun.
All event proceeds go towards much-needed lung health and air quality research, education, and lung patient support programs across the province. For more information or to register, call 604-731-LUNG or toll free 1-800-665-LUNG or email [email protected].
