Sunshine Coast RCMP reported the following March 21 to 28.
Collision
- Very early on March 24, police attended a single-vehicle incident in the 5800 block of Trail Avenue, Sechelt, after a vehicle rolled over, damaging a fence panel, a BC Hydro box, and a light standard before coming to a stop. The vehicle was unoccupied when police arrived, but witnesses were able to provide information about the last seen direction of travel of both the driver and passenger. Police located both parties and determined they had not sustained any serious injuries. The driver, who was given a roadside alcohol screening test with negative results, advised being very tired before driving. BC Hydro was called and attended immediately to fix the hydro box and the totalled vehicle was towed from the scene. The matter has been referred to ICBC.
- On March 27, police attended a two-vehicle incident in the 6800 block of Sunshine Coast Highway, Sechelt, after the first vehicle driving eastbound crossed over the centre line and collided into the second westbound vehicle. Fortunately, no serious injuries were reported but both vehicles sustained significant damage and had to be towed from the scene. The first vehicle driver, who was not impaired, was issued a violation ticket for drive without due care. The matter has been referred to ICBC.
Break and enter
- Sometime between March 14 and 23, a suspect gained entry to a storage room located inside a residential building in the 5100 block of Davis Bay Road, Sechelt, and then unscrewed the wooden door off an individual storage locker to steal a 2018 CCM women’s 5-speed mountain bike. The matte black and blue bike, which was in excellent condition, had an aftermarket grey and white cell phone holder attached to the handlebars. Anyone with any information about this break and enter and theft is asked to contact RCMP, reference police file number 2022-2018.
- On March 26 at approximately 4 a.m., two suspects were caught on surveillance video breaking into a shed located behind a business in the 5600 block of Cowrie Street, Sechelt. The male suspect, who was wearing a red top, black jacket, ball cap, shoes, and jeans, used a pry bar and claw hamper to gain entry to the building, and he and the female suspect stole an unknown amount of bagged clothing. Police are attempting to identify the suspects.
- Late on March 26, a witness reported an unauthorized male at an address in the 5500 block of Sunshine Coast Highway, Sechelt. Police attended and located cut locks for two storage containers; it appears the suspect gained entry to the containers and stole a large piece of wheeled equipment. The file is still under investigation. Anyone with any information about this incident is asked to contact RCMP, reference police file 2022-2081.
- On March 28, at approximately 6:30 a.m., a suspect was caught on surveillance video attempting to break into a business in the 5600 block of Mermaid Street, Sechelt. Police reviewed the video and identified the suspect, who is known to police. While attending this incident, police learned the suspect may have also been involved in a second break and enter to a business in the 5500 block of Trail Avenue, Sechelt, and are waiting to review video footage that may have captured the second incident. Both files are still under investigation.
Fraud
- On March 26, a Coast resident received a pop-up notification on her computer indicating that her computer had been hacked and to phone the number on the screen immediately. The resident phoned the number and someone purporting to be from her internet service provider advised her that she needed to pay them to fix her computer. The resident provided a credit card number as well as personal information to the scammer, but fortunately, after hanging up, suspected she was being scammed and cancelled her credit card right away. The resident phoned RCMP and was advised to contact her bank to let them know what had happened and to monitor her accounts. Impaired driving
- On March 27, a witness reported a possible impaired driver in the 1000 block of Venture Way, Gibsons. Police located the suspect car and driver nearby and initiated a traffic stop. The lone occupant and driver, who was exhibiting signs of possible intoxication from alcohol, was given a roadside alcohol screening test. After a fail result, the driver was issued a 90-day immediate roadside prohibition and his vehicle was impounded for 30 days. The matter has been referred to RoadSafetyBC.
Theft
- Between March 25 and 28, a suspect gained entry to Canada Post community mailbox parcel compartments by prying open the locked door. It is unknown if any parcels were actually stolen. Anyone with any information about these on-going incidents is asked to contact RCMP, reference police file number 2022-2107.
Property found
- On March 24, a small woman’s ring was found on the waterfront walkway near the conveyor belt on the shishalh Nation. Owner may claim with detailed description within 90 days. Please reference police file number 2022-2016.
- On March 26, a laptop computer was found in the 4500 block of Sunshine Coast Highway, Sechelt. Owner may claim within 90 days with detailed description. Please reference police file 2022-2062.
