Imagine departing on your bike at 3:30 a.m. in Kelowna for a 400-km ride arriving in Delta at 10:30 p.m. — all in one day? On June 22, 2013 Coaster David English, along with 85 other riders, did just that by participating in the Ride2Survive, an independent ride for the Canadian Cancer Society.
Each rider pays an entrance fee and is required to raise a minimum of $2,500.
Last year English raised almost $6,000 from support of family and friends. During the last nine years, more than $2.3 million has gone directly to cancer research.
This year the ride celebrates its 10th anniversary.
English supported this event last year in memory of his brother who lost his short battle with cancer in July 2012, and to honour family and friends who continue to battle and those who have won.
The ride in 2013 was an incredible experience, which is why English has chosen to do this again.
“The riders and crew are bused to Kelowna, and upon arrival the riders get their bikes ready,” English said. “Friday evening everyone meets for the dinner, last-minute logistic meetings and introductions of all riders and volunteer crew. Riders share their stories, which are very moving and emotional. We then head to the hotel for a few hours sleep before waking at 1:45 a.m. to get ready for the ride.
“As the riders roll into a stop, the crew cheers them on and assists them by filling water bottles and distributing food. The riders are a team where everyone starts, rides and finishes together. The riders help one another along the way, encouraging you when your legs and mind are finished.”
