Coast Car Co-op is delighted to announce the expansion of its fleet to six vehicles with the acquisition of its third hybrid sedan, which will be stationed at Trail Bay Mall in Sechelt.

“This is an important milestone for the Co-op as 50% of our fleet is now low emission vehicles,” said Johan Stroman, Co-op founder and board member.

The co-op is enjoying its 10th year of operation on the lower Sunshine Coast, with more than 300 registered drivers and more than 12,000 vehicle bookings to date. The co-op has four sedans and two pickup trucks, centrally located in Gibsons, Roberts Creek, and Sechelt.

Anyone with a valid driving licence and a clean driving record can join the co-op. Members purchase a $400 fully refundable membership share and can then book vehicles, paying an hourly rate plus mileage for usage. In celebration of the new Sechelt vehicle, the co-op will waive its $25 registration fee for Sechelt residents who join during the month of September.

CCC members may also register to drive with Modo, gaining access to more than 1,000 vehicles in Metro Vancouver, Victoria, Nanaimo and Kelowna. Modo currently has two vehicles stationed at Langdale and two in Horseshoe Bay.

Purchase of the 2015 Prius was made possible by grant funding from the Community Passenger Transportation Fund of Island Coastal Economic Trust (ICET), and donations from members and supporters.

ICET’s 2023 Island Coastal Inter-Community Transportation Study highlighted the challenges and gaps in transportation for small and rural communities, and the need for community-based partnerships to improve our transportation networks while reducing our greenhouse gas emissions.

“We were especially honoured to be the only car invited to Car Free Day (hosted by TraC)  in Sechelt September 7,” said Aaron Walker, treasurer.  “We’re all part of the transportation solution — active transportation, transit, ride hailing and car sharing — nd we look forward to working with community partners to increase access to affordable, convenient and greener transportation options.”
