Celebrating ‘All Creatures Great and Small’ at St. Bart's

Marking the Feast of St. Francis of Assisi

When I tell people I’m a vicar, one of the images that invariably comes to their mind is veterinarian James Herriot visiting farms around the Yorkshire Dales. This notion thoroughly captured my own imagination as a young woman. Being a priest on the Sunshine Coast is somewhat different, and in some ways the same.

As Anglicans, we make a promise at each baptism to “respect the dignity of every human being” and to “safeguard the integrity of creation.” This includes all creatures, perhaps especially those that are non-human, as well as people of all cultures, orientations and ages. It is in that spirit that we offer our annual Feast of St. Francis of Assisi on Sunday, Oct. 6.

This 13th century monk gave up the luxuries of the city, and began a small community surrounded by nature. Many of St. Francis’ legends feature animal guides, which is why we traditionally bless animals on his feast day. We invite you to join us! Enjoy a nature-centered service at 11 a.m., or simply bring your animal friends – those still living, photos of those deceased or unavailable, and even stuffed toys – for a blessing at noon, outside if the weather permits.

We’ll offer homemade cookies and lemonade, and a free petting farm, courtesy of Farm Ventures! Additionally, our Godly Play center will be open with activities for curious children and families and free giveaways to keep the fun going at home. Spiritual formation and Montessori teacher, Anja Erz, joins our team after years of teaching in Germany, with creative and outdoor experiences for children and youth. Our family also now includes Chartwell Childcare, and they will have their doors open at noon for those seeking quality daycare for children, infants to five years old.

So come venture with us! It’s a beautiful, diverse world, and we give thanks for our place among it.
