I am writing this week as the wind howls, it feels a little bit like I’m playing chicken with an impending power outage as my lights dim in and out. I found half of our “bus stop” in the middle of Redrooffs earlier as I trudged along dressed like the villain from I Know What You Did Last Summer. This could be a weather column considering how much big weather we have experienced this year and how much it seems to affect the day-to-day for us Halfmoon Bay residents.
Unfortunately, with that, the call had to be made to cancel the Sail Pass this year. Although we remained optimistic we’d get the chance to see the brightly lit boats cruise by, the right call was made for the safety of all involved. A huge thank you to Lynn and John Smith and all the participants who held onto hope until the last possible second. We hope to see it bigger, better and drier next year from the shores of Coopers Green.
The Saturday Jam went ahead with a holiday flare, though with a smaller turn out, keeping this new local event going forward. I spoke to Tracy Wandling this week, who is spearheading this event, and she hopes this week will bring both more spectators (and participants) down to Coopers Green Saturday from 7 to 9 p.m. All are welcome!
We are on pace for a record-breaking year responding to call outs at the Halfmoon Bay Fire Department and as the temperatures continue to drop we are bound to see more slip and fall-related calls. A few ways to avoid these types of accidents are wearing proper footwear, clearing and salting walkways and stairs, keeping areas well-lit and paying proper attention when getting in and out of your vehicle or leaving your home.
Thank you for all the kind words I received about my first column last week. My goal is to best showcase this special corner of the Coast we get to call home. I would love to hear about any local “happenings” anytime, especially New Years Eve or Day celebrations. I have been seeing efforts online to put together a local polar plunge event this year but little else so far. Please feel free to contact me at [email protected] if you have any upcoming events to be featured or want to connect about all things happening in Halfmoon Bay.
