Celebrated in more than 175 countries, Earth Day was founded in 1970 by United States senator Gaylord Nelson.
The date of April 22 corresponds to the arrival of spring in the Northern Hemisphere and autumn in the Southern Hemisphere.
Locally, Earth Day will be celebrated this Sunday, April 27 at the Roberts Creek Pier. A wonderful array of entertainment will run from noon to 5 p.m. Key community and environmental groups will be represented and local crafts and artwork will be available for sale. This year’s event is targeting zero-waste generation with a bicycle courier dishwashing service.
The Sunshine Coast Regional District will treat eco-friendly transit-riders to some lively tunes as they make their way to the event on the Musical Bus. The Sunshine Coast Cycling Club and TraC will offer free bike tune-ups to those who ride to Earth Day.
Recognizing the ecological value in re-using material goods, the Earth Day toy exchange invites children to trade well-loved yet little-worn books or toys. The cheerful Earth Day poster features the artwork of Roberts Creek kindergarten student, Ella Brooks. Local students have produced Earth Day short-films, which will be screened from 1 to 4 p.m. in the Roberts Creek Library.

4 p.m. - raffle draw and poster presentation to Ella Brooks
4:15 p.m. - Robotic Horse Mechanical Sun
