Re: Michael and Denise Sherman's letter (Coast Reporter, Oct. 15).
I have had someone very close in my life who suffered from mental illnesses much like the people potentially to be treated in Cottage Farm, so I truly have empathy for their plight.
Yet I am also realistic. Cottage Farm, in theory, is a positive step for those who need it and can obtain/afford access to it. Though having said that, it would be much better suited for a larger centre, where rotation of patients can be better absorbed into the community.
There is precious little affordable housing or work here. There is also absolutely no infrastructure set up in the proposed area who pays for that? Minimal staffing for the suggested number of patients is also a realistic concern - not to mention the close proximity to a children's camp and an elementary school.
There are many things to consider, and I daresay, Mr. and Ms. Sherman of Halfmoon Bay, if it were in your back yard, I doubt you would be so supportive.
