Trap bylaw: another opinion

I read the newspaper every week and read many recent articles regarding the proposed trapping bylaw being considered by the District of Sechelt.

It would appear that many people have "agendas" concerning this issue.

For example, the words expressed by one of our new councilors Doug Hockley when he says he does not want any input from other parties, which may be contradictory to Lesley Fox from the Association for the Protection of Fur-Bearing Animals.

As an elected official, Coun. Hockley is expected to listen to all parties' opinions regarding Village affairs.

I also take issue with the opinions voiced by Fox.

In all probability she has never had to hunt or trap to eat or earn a living. She probably just walked to the store to buy her winter clothing and her groceries. Also her job, which is her livelihood, probably pays very well to do whatever it takes to ban anything that her organization wants to ban next.

I also take issue with comments made in a recent letter by Cecilia Ohm-Erickson who is concerned her dog may be caught in a trap. Anyone who walks their dog off-lease in the wilderness should be aware that there is a better chance of their dog being hurt or killed by otherdogs which are prone to attack other dogs, wolves, coyotes, cougars or even being shot while harassing wildlife by a conservation officer, than being caught in a trap.

I have spent more time in the wilderness than anyone of these people. I am more concerned about animals being hurt by automobiles than by traps.
