Re: Proposed District of Sechelt trap bylaw

While I appreciate the thought that Coun. Alice Lutes and Chris Moore put into their comments regardingthis proposed bylaw, at the committee of the whole meeting on April 11 their logic totally eludes me.

Lutes stated that passing this bylaw could result in the loss of jobs. Has the trapping of furbearing animals for commerce or trade ever been a viable industry in the District of Sechelt? I suspect if someone's livelihood was at risk as a result of this bylaw, they would have been heard from by now.

Moore indicated that although he supports the bylaw, because trapping was an integral part of this country's history, the Trappers Association should be consulted out of respect. I'm sorry? The use of slaves to build a railroad was an integral part of our history, as were residential schools and internment of Japanese Canadians during the Second World War. I agree that it is important to remember where we come from. This can help us evolve into a more civilized and humane society.

How can offering that special interest group a say possibly facilitate the passage of this bylaw, which will be one that will help Sechelt grow to be a better, safer community for all?
