Disgusted, embarrassed, inside anger competing with the hot temperatures outside, I stood at the Langdale terminal last week waiting for a visitor to arrive. Barbed wire? The chain link fences weren't enough? And why? One of the workmen constructing the fence said that the barbed-wire-topped fences have been installed to provide security during the Olympics. Is this a ridiculous overreaction? An underestimation of terrorists and the intricacy of their plans? A feel-good face saver for U.S. visitors?
Now instead of disembarking at paradise, ferry travellers have to enter what looks like a prison. This is not how I like to think of home.
