The first holiday weekend is here and we hope it's a safe one. Yet every year it seems there is some sort of tragedy on the roadways.
Instead of barbecues and ball games, long weekends are associated with fatalities on the highways.
This week, unfortunately, accidents came a weekend earlier, claiming the lives of two area locals.
A Gibsons man was killed after his vehicle went off the road on the Coquihalla Highway last Saturday. And on Sunday, emergency crews pulled a 19-year-old Powell River man from a car wreck near Halfmoon Bay. He later died in hospital.
Two senseless deaths involving young people from our area in one week is too many, let alone on one weekend.
Police are still investigating both incidents and can't be sure of the cause of either accident. But we can guess that speed, fatigue or the combination of the two were factors.
This weekend, be careful when you're travelling. Remember to buckle up and mind your speed. We don't need another tragedy this weekend.
Community FoundationThis week we had the pleasure of witnessing the launch of a great venture on the Coast.
The Sunshine Coast Community Foundation officially kicked off at the Seaside Centre. The foundation received a $25,000 cheque from the Sunshine Coast Credit Union and already seems to be on the right track.
It's great to see so many committed volunteers and business-minded folks get this foundation off the ground. This is a wonderful thing for the Coast and something we should all support.
A community foundation provides a new opportunity to keep our charity dollars on the Sunshine Coast, helping out arts and culture, heritage, conservation, health, social services, children and youth, sports and recreation, seniors and education - something that is needed and something we can be all proud of.
