The Sunshine Coast Regional District (SCRD) sustainable communities policy states that in addressing local and environmental issues, the directors recognize that "responsible local government is key to building sustainable communities."
The policy further states that "delivery of SCRD services shall improve quality of life while protecting the environment." The policy defines a sustainable community as one which, as an organization, "provides various services while diligently pursuing to protect the environment."
I would like to ask the SCRD where their diligence has gone. After spending thousands of dollars and person hours on reports, committees and experts' advice, all of which have advised the same result: a vote for a transfer station in Pender Harbour, how can SCRD directors back down in the face of bullying and consider a referendum on the question?
When any group of constituents is proposing something that, according to all expert reports, is environmentally unsound, the directors have a responsibility to adhere to their own policy, to lead and to vote it down. When that same group is led by Howard White, whose brother Don has the contract to maintain the landfill, the response and responsibilities of the directors should be even more clear.
