Amid all the fuss about Davis Bay shoulders and seawalls, seniors and signals, stop signs and speed limits, the long-awaited bypass continues to surface as an alternative (albeit expensive) solution to these other troublesome plans. No one, however, should hold their breath for this much-needed, logical, long-term solution.

As long as the people of the Sunshine Coast continue to elect as their representative a member of the opposition party, the bypass will never be built. It doesn't matter which party is in power (remember the Island Highway and the NDP?) - it is simply a fact that no opposition member will ever be handed such a major plum by the party in power, virtually ensuring his or her re-election the next time around. Politics simply doesn't work like that.
