I was disappointed that you abandoned your plan to update our national anthem. Like 50 per cent of this country, I am not a "son" but feel as much "true patriot love" as the other half - why shouldn't I be included?
With the Olympics having given O Canada more airplay than ever, it's about time to rewrite that one outdated line. Why not hold a nation-wide contest to find a creative alternative to "True patriot love in all thy sons' command" - something that would blend seamlessly into the otherwise stirring lyrics?
In the '60s such a contest brought us the design of our current flag. At the time, any change to the old red ensign was equally unpopular among die-hard conservatives. But who would go back?
