Congratulations go out to three of the Coast Reporter’s crew who brought in Canadian Community Newspaper Awards last week.

These awards – administered by News Media Canada – celebrate the excellence of community newspapers across the country.

Coast Reporter received first place in the best coverage of the arts for newspapers with a circulation of 10,000 – and full credit for this award lies with our indefatigable champion for the arts, Michael Gurney. With creativity and eloquence, Michael shows us every week why arts matter so much on the Coast.

Our amazing special projects manager, Nancy Tiffin, who is responsible for all of our special features – including the recently published Family and Child Directory – and our advertising team placed first for best special section in newspapers with circulation 10,000 and above for Coast Kids. The adorable feature sees school students draw ads for local businesses. Obviously, the judges found it too heartwarming to ignore!

Finally, our reporter Keili Bartlett received a second-place award for best agricultural story for “A demonstration farm takes root in Sechelt” about the regenerative farm that’s now providing produce for the hospital. If you haven’t read this piece, Keili wrote an engrossing story that ties in science, climate change, people, healing and hope.

I get the pleasure of working with Michael, Nancy and Keili every week, and they’re as great in person as they come across on the page – these awards are well-earned. Congratulations to all!
