Editor:
Ironic that Mathew Wilson’s “ad” (April 28, Coast Reporter) is entitled “Seniors’ care project needs celebrating, not name-calling,” then continues to name-call and spread lies about Nicholas Simons slowing down the process.
If he took the time to check his facts, Wilson would discover that before Trellis can “break ground,” the project still has to go to District of Sechelt planning committee and then pass first reading before it could go to a public hearing – and it isn’t even on the agenda yet. According to Coast Reporter archives, construction is proposed to be finished by August 2018.
I attended the first meeting where Trellis and Vancouver Coastal Health (VCH) first faced a very angry community to answer questions about the project. Jennifer Whiteside from the Hospital Employees’ Union asked if workers would lose their jobs and was told by Lauren Tindall of VCH that staff would be “allowed” to reapply for their jobs under a new contract; there were no guarantees that they would be hired and might have to move off the Coast to work at another VCH facility. Nicholas didn’t have to do anything to get the crowd riled up, and they continue to be riled up to this day. Nicholas listened to their concerns, and as a good MLA should (pay attention, Mathew!) he has taken their concerns to the Legislature, VCH and former Minister of Health Terry Lake, among other actions.
In typical BC Liberal fashion, Wilson is telling fibs, knowing that once out “there” they will cause uncertainty. But not here in our community! You have a lot to learn about the Sunshine Coast, Mathew Wilson.
