Editor:
I was surprised to learn that many people in Sechelt don’t take visiting friends and family to the waterfront because “there’s nothing there for them.” Really? I’ve always thought that the whole point of the waterfront was the magnificent view of the Trail Islands and the open water stretching out to Vancouver Island—not to mention the sunsets. I’m put in mind of a suggestion, decades back, that there ought to be a hot dog stand at Cliff Gilker Park, because without such an amenity, there was “nothing there.”
If I have an appointment in Sechelt, and the bus gets me there too early on a nice day, I don’t hesitate to stroll along the waterfront. It’s not always “too windy,” and if there’s a brisk breeze one benefits from the mood-enhancing “negative ions.” If I lived in Sechelt, I’d definitely take visitors for a waterfront walk. But I guess the view has already been exploited by the tall buildings that fence it off from the main thoroughfare and now we’re looking for some other way to extract profit?
Don’t take the natural beauty of your setting for granted, people of Sechelt. Not everyone has views like that.
Sincerely,
Anne Miles
