Editor:
In response to Adrian Dowle’s letter “What are the safety measures for EVs on Ferries”;
Unfortunately, this letter follows the misinformation on EVs, particularly regarding vehicle fires.
According to US Government data (replicated on any ICE vs EV study), EVs account for 25 fires per 100,000, while gasoline vehicles account for 1,529 fire per 100,000 vehicles. This shows gasoline vehicles are over 60 times more probable to catch fire than EVs.
I have seen no special measures introduced for this increased danger of gasoline vehicles. Will BCF charge more for gasoline vehicles to pay for separate fire suppression equipment? Will BCF isolate all gasoline vehicles on a separate deck and lane? Have BCF adequately trained their union staff to deal with gasoline fire events? Why has BCF not publicly issued statements to reassure the public about gasoline vehicle marine safety measures such as limiting the number of gasoline vehicles on any sailing?
The advantage of implementing any of these counter-measures will also have the added benefit of reduced toxic fumes emitted by these vehicles.
Too many questions not enough answers?!
Sincerely,
