Letters: The Sport of Fiction

Editor:

(Re: “Teen tabloid tells all in new Reece novel”)

Coast Confidential, the bogus gossip tabloid-come-novel, upset readers who took it for real. Last summer, a café owner in Davis Bay banned the broadsheet from the premises. It was disturbing her customers. Promotional posters were scrawled and slashed in anger. After all, the mayor of Gibsons was apparently selling our aquifer! A comet was on a deadly trajectory for Planet Earth. Somebody’s mom turned into a seagull. And the Dalai Lama had blessed the Roberts Creek mandala.

Yes, all lies. But as author, Stephen King, once said, “Fiction is a lie—and good fiction is the truth inside the lie.”

As the author of Coast Confidential, I challenge readers to engage with the sport of fiction and find the truth.

Find Waldo!
