Letters: The real costs of fossil fuels

Factoring in the real costs of burning fossil fuels, fire, flood, tornadoes and government subsidies, we are already paying more to use oil than we pay at the pump. If we successfully sue big oil, we will only get a small amount of their already excessive profits, so they actually wouldn’t have to raise prices to maintain a profitable business. Our government could then use the money to help businesses pivot to green energy and repair damage to oil fields that have been left behind. 

We need energy for cooking, heating and transportation. We don’t need planet destroying oil. We need energy alternatives. Here in B.C., we have Hydro, but we are in danger of losing it to global warming. If we lose our glaciers and rainfall and therefore rivers, we could lose hydro power as they have in China. We need energy that doesn’t destroy the Earth.
